Interesting points. I’ve heard a lot of debate on whether or not now is the time to start your own business. Looking at what our generation has: cheap air travel across the world, internet to bridge people worldwide, and amazing technological platforms available, NOW is the time to start your own business. What we need is innovators. Today’s Einstein, Bell, and Franklin, will make a huge difference. We can all be users of today’s technology – but who will step up and be the innovators?

Great Post! I think that for people who are being hired at BDC’s right now aren’t getting paid what they’re worth. I think that its a much better choice to join a start up because although you’ll be underpayed, there is more room for growth and success!

Great point. The environment impacts everyone, even salmon, to some extent. Analogies always have their limitations and you pointed out a real-world hole in mine.

If there were such a thing, I would hope that an entrepreneurial salmon would find a way to “make it happen” when the urge hits, even under adverse circumstances.

Great post. “Necessity is mother of all intention” — i think for some folks, jobs are simply not there, and you almost have no choice but starting your own business. It’s not a bad thing — it just takes a different mind set and perseverance to succeed.

BTW — I love blog and I wish that you can write more because your advice is very practical, and relevant to the current economic environment.

I live right next to a creek in northern California where we have been waiting for the salmon to come for months now. Now that the rains have come, it seems the few that are left are coming. It turns out that if the conditions aren’t right, they can’t make it upstream. They know it’s time, but they have to wait for the surge so that it’s even possible to make the journey.

I’m not saying that your analogy is wrong. But as with the salmon, I don’t think a startup can hope to succeed unless certain basic conditions are met. There has to be a swell or wave of some sort. Whether times are tough or not. It’s going to be a long hard slog either way. And you must be nimble and prepared to iterate through changing realities. As does the salmon navigating the stream.
