Andy,

Good question. I should have made this more clear.

You can be an Innovator by taking an 'old' solution that has been used to solve another problem and reapply it to solve a different problem.

In this case, the 'different' problem the old solution is solving is also an 'old' problem. Hence, old solution solving an old problem.

For instance, you might take a small engine that has been used on mopeds for years and apply it to the 'old' problem of purifying water in third world countries.

The "innovation" is in the application of the existing technology.

I hope this helps clarify the confusion.

Thanks for your input.

Seems right to me. You're using an 'old' solution for an entirely different 'old' problem, which makes it innovative. For example, in the past - innovating train refrigerator carts designed for carting ice, to instead carry livestock in a cool environment.

It's not innoventing since nothing new is being developed. It is about instead leveraging old technology in new ways to solve 'old problems'.

Are you sure your diagram is correct? How can someone solving an 'old' problem with an 'old' solution be an innovator?
